DELTA was created in 1988 following the merger of the Centre d'Économie Quantitative et Comparative [Centre for Quantitative and Comparative Economics] (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, EHESS) and the Laboratoire d'Economie Politique [Economic Policy Laboratory] (Ecole normale supérieure, ENS). Its first Director was François Bourguignon (1988-1991), followed by Roger Guesnerie (1991-2000) and Thierry Verdier (since June 2000).
DELTA is a joint research unit (unité mixte de recherche) of
the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), EHESS and ENS,
comprising both research and doctoral teaching
activities.
DELTA has developed extensive contacts, in particular through consulting
activities for public and private, national and international organizations.
The involvement of DELTA in international research is reflected in its
publications, exchanges with foreign universities, participation in conference
organisation, and editorial responsabilities (DELTA members are - or have
been - editor or co-editor of Econometrica,
European
Economic Review, the Journal
of Economic Theory, and Economic
Policy).
DELTA's research activities are organized around a common methodological framework. The analysis of economic problems combines the use of formal models and econometric testing. The domain of application is broad and encompasses several subfields of economic science, the frontiers of which are constantly redefined by contemporary economic research. Classification by themes is hence variable. The themes remaining at the forefront of DELTA's research since its creation are :

The members of DELTA are both researchers and teachers. They participate
in the doctoral program DEA
"Analyse et Politique Economiques", jointly sponsored by EHESS,
Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique (ENSAE),
ENS and Ecole
Polytechnique, that delivers a master's degree and a Ph. D.. Since
its creation, the directors of the doctoral program have been DELTA members,
affiliated with EHESS: Roger Guesnerie (1981-1988), Charles Wyplosz (1989-1990),
Gabrielle Demange (1991-1999) and Christophe Chamley (since 2000).
The doctoral program is also part of the European Doctoral Program in Quantitative Economics, including the London School of Economics (LSE), the Pompeu Fabra Universidad in Barcelona, Bonn Universität, and the Université Catholique de Louvain. In France the doctoral program has close ties with the corresponding doctoral programs of the Université de Paris I.
DELTA is located on the ENS campus, boulevard Jourdan, in the south
of Paris. In 1998, it was joined there by the Laboratoire d'Economie Appliquée
[Applied Economics Laboratory], LEA
(INRA), and in 1999 by the Laboratoire de Sciences
Sociales [Social Sciences Laboratory] (ENS) and the Bibliothèque
Jean Ibanès,
library for economics and social sciences (ENS). Finally 2000 saw the
arrival of CEPREMAP [Centre
for prospective research in mathematical economics applied to planning]
and CERAS [Centre for Teaching
and Research in Socio-economic Analysis] (ENPC). These research centres
have recently joined together to form the "Fédération PARIS
Jourdan".
The Jourdan site seeks to be both an active centre for research and teaching in economics, and an institution that promotes intellectual exchange between economics and other social sciences.
